The Future of NWN Round Table Discussion, By Jay Watamaniuk Go to Page (Previous Page - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Last comments?
Lycius: My final comment would be this: Thank you BioWare, even if you don't like mouthy PW admins ;). You've still given us something we've never had before. Rizzen: Thanks for letting me give me 2 cents! I hope to see some new faces out there! Papermonk: Thanks for this opportunity! LadyRolePlay: The NWN game engine is extremely powerful and has given tremendous power to a player/owner to create a unique (self-written/inspired) game. I can only hope that, while focusing on a good adventure, the future of NWN does not lose sight of the 'freedom to live without the game maker' sentiment it appears to have created. I originally got NWN as a way to play D&D with my real life friends. But the community support from both Neverwinter Connections, module makers, and custom content makers, as well as the continuing support from BioWare, has turned it into something that has exceeded all my original expectations and is the reason that NWN is still going strong two years after its initial release. This is not to say that everything's perfect and you can slack off though :P. NWN is persistent because it is a field of one. No other product comes close in allowing PW or GM'd games. Certainly, the included mods and third-party mods have little to do with it. Once you've done them it's over. People play all multiplayer games as a way of interacting with other players, and this one, encouraging so much real Role Playing, does that extremely well. I would have to see that offbeat compression system and its offbeat implementation replaced with something that works well on all systems, and the attitude that created it and supported it against all who complained about the horrendous amount of damage done to us over the years be done away with. Customers are supposed to be the reason for their work, not an interruption of it. Once that is done, they need to take seriously that the continuing popularity NWN is because of PW and GM'd games (and the ability to do custom content to support them), not their built-in adventures. It has been both extremes for me: some of the best gaming I have ever done, and some of the greatest frustration and disappointment. All the good has been from players and co-GM builders giving their best and expressing satisfaction with mine. All the bad has been broken code, file corruption which has cost far more hours work than was ever put into actual creative work, limited or missing features, and a lack of addressing those issues. Now it seems the match is nearly over, but BioWare can still make a few correct moves and win. I hope they do. Poetic Colossus: Let me roll a wisdom check for a witty closing remark. (Rolls Dice.) Ouch. Steelwind: Yes. Buying NWN was the best money I have ever spent on anything in my entire life and helping to grow this community has been rewarding and important to me.. How's that for a thank you? :-) Go to Page (Previous Page - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Want to comment on this article or read what others have to say about it? Join the official discussion! |
