12.16.2011Kids with Cancer Society of Edmonton at BioWareBioWare participated in this year's Kids with Cancer Breaded Journey Gala by donating "The BioWare Experience" to the auction.
The BioWare Experience allowed the participating children an all access pass to the studio with tours, lessons on how the games are made, and the very unique opportunity to do some voice over work!
The auction item proved to be highly coveted as it earned the charity gala $15,500. The children involved with The BioWare Experience were given a backpack full of SWAG and a DVD showing off their work. Their hard work included the voice over clip with the characters from the Dragon Age universe and the 3D character they fashioned with pencil crayons earlier that day.
It was an exciting event for all involved and it was an absolute honour to meet the participating kids and parents who have showed such strength and determination with their fight against cancer.
Make sure to check out the voice over video that the kids worked so hard on.

12.05.2011New Fan Spotlight! This week’s fan spotlight is shining on Ritzy Foxx, a super talented plushie craftswoman.
Keep an eye out this week on our Facebook pages and Twitter feeds for pictures of her awesome plushiesThanks for taking the time to answer our questions, Ritzy! How long does it take you to finish a plushie? It depends on the amount of detail going into the plush, whether or not I have to draft a pattern, and if I've made the plush before. For example, it took me a little over an hour to draft the hanar pattern then about 7 hours to cut the material and hand-sew the little guy together making the work going into him around 8 hours. However, when I used the same pattern to make a second hanar for the tutorial I put together it only took about 5 to 6 hours to complete him. Urz was a different beast--no pun intended--when it came to the amount of work mainly due to the amount of detail. I spent a good 2 hours working on his pattern then at least 12 putting him together and adding all of the details. You are clearly talented at crafting! What other artsy skills do you like to indulge in?Aside from making plush, I have made cosplay for myself and friends, and I'm currently being crafty with various programming languages for both university course work and leisure.Do you have any other kinds of fan art?Making plush and cosplay are really the only kinds of fan art I participate in, but I'll sometimes do customizations of clothing or accessories. Are you able to be this creative in your day job?Yes and no. I work part-time at GameStop and I'm attending university full-time for a bachelor's in Computer Science. My CompSci professors usually give us a base idea of what they want for projects and we're allowed to create them in any way of our choosing (within reason, of course), but it's only when I team up with others to participate in competitions that the juices can really flow. Right now I'm part of a team that's preparing to enter the University of Illinois Games4Girls competition. What was the first game that got you interested in BioWare? The sci-fi and RPG genres have always been close to my heart, but Mass Effect 1 really grabbed my attention when I realized that I would have story-impacting choices and could play as a female Commander Shepard. The moment I first started experiencing the story I knew I was hooked on the series and it ended up being my gateway drug into Dragon Age.What do you look for most in videogames when you are playing? (story, action, art….ect)The story is probably the main thing I look for when playing a video game. A game could have the best art, the best game play, but if it doesn't have a strong story to connect it all together then I feel it falls flat. I've played games that have had fantastic art and game play, but I just couldn't finish them because the story felt empty and couldn't grasp my attention. Then there have been other games with a fantastic story that have art and gameplay that is so sub-par which that I've stuck with from beginning to end because I needed to see the story through. Thanks Ritzy! -

11.29.2011Brand New Fan Spotlight! In this week’s Fan Spotlight, we are featuring Jessie Lam, an incredibly talented Canadian digital artist! You may have seen her amazing artwork at San Diego Comic Con Fan Art Showcase this summer. Learn more about Jessie and her artistic motivations in the interview below.
1. Hey Jessie! Where are you from?I'm from Toronto, Ontario.
2. How long have you been creating masterpieces?Ever since I discovered the Wacom Graphire 1 tablet and Photoshop 6.0.3. Can you explain the process you go through when creating your digital pieces?Sometimes it's a spontaneous process where an image sticks in my head and I put it down on Photoshop before I forget. Other times it helps to use a series of thumbnails to get a general sense of layout and lighting. I usually work in black and white first before moving onto colour.4. Do you have a favourite game that you use as your inspiration? A favorite character?
Not games per se but I do have favourite films I use as inspiration! A lot of them involve explosions.Mass Effect 2 is a definite inspiration for some of the fan art I do get to make. Even though it's sci-fi, I love how grounded its universe feels. As for favourite character I'm really, really torn between Jack and Isabela [Dragon Age 2]. They crack me up in so many ways.5. How long does it take you to finish a piece?
Anywhere from a couple hours to a good 12 hours on and off. Depends on how much stuff goes into a piece and how much caffeine I have.6. You are clearly talented at crafting! What other artsy skills do you like to indulge in?Digital sculpting in Zbrush! It's so much fun. I could spend all day making monsters out of clay.7. Do you have any other kinds of fan art?Sure! Whenever I do have the time to make fan art, many of them are done on request or inspired by game-fueled conversations I have with friends.8. Are you able to be this creative in your day job?All the time. To be accurate I'm usually given a set of guidelines to work off of and go from there. Whenever I do get carte blanche on something I'm like a kid in a candy store.9. What was the first game that got you interested in BioWare?Jade Empire! It gave me quite a bit of kung fu movie nostalgia. Complete with excellent English dub. However I totally fell head over heels for Mass Effect.10. What do you look for most in videogames when you are playing? (story, action, art….ect)Granted I love pretty graphics and strong art direction and all, what I really want in a game is for it to be fun to play for hours and hours on end. If the story and the characters are solid, it's a definite bonus. Thanks so much Jessie!
Keep an eye out on our Facebook pages and Twitter feeds (@masseffect, @bioware, @dragonage) for updates on Jessie’s artwork!

11.21.2011Fans SpotlightThis week's Fan Spotlight is definitely a fan of Mass Effect! Jennifer Stolzer's work was shown in this year's San Diego Comic Con Fan Art Contest where her Wrex Plushie took home "Best Innovation."
Jennifer has a true talent for looking at the Mass Effect characters in a unique light. Her creativity made her stand out this summer and we wanted to bring her back into the spotlight and interview her so we could show off more work! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us Jennifer!1. Hey Jennifer! Where are you from?St. Louis, Missouri USA2. How long have you been creating your masterpieces?
Bioware Masterpieces or otherwise? My earliest artistic memory was drawing on the inside of my closet door with a red crayon when I was three years old. I've been making digital art since I was in highschool. I've only started making Mass Effect fanart in the last two years.3. Can you explain the process you go through when creating your digital pieces? All art begins with a story. Most my inspiration comes from imagining a whole scenario in my head then picking the one image that tells that story the most effectively. I use a Wacom Intuos4 drawing tablet and Photoshop for most my digital pieces. They are both remarkable tools - I couldn't live without them!4. Do you have a favorite game that you use as your inspiration? A favorite character?
I love well developed adventure games like Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, the Portal games and Mass Effect. I love Wrex the most, I feel like his friendship with Shepard is the most sincere and charming of all the relationships in Mass Effect 1. I'd trade a romance subplot for drinks and war-stories with Wrex any day of the week.5. How long does it take you to finish a piece?I don't like to spend more than four hours on a piece of fan art. Most my projects are completed in one sitting with the exception of plushes - they can take weeks! (they are well worth the time, Jennifer)6. What other artsy skills do you like to indulge in?Aside from digital art I animate both 3D and 2D, make crafts and sew plushes. I'm also writing a fantasy novel, Threadcaster, that I hope to publish. I use art to develop character and story for my book the same way game developers use concept art to make games. It's a really fulfilling creative experience.7. Do you have any other kinds of fan art? Many other kinds. Art is my favorite way of exploring the characters and scenarios I love. I'm probably most famous for my Halo-themed webcomic Company0051, but I draw a bit of everything from live action and games to cartoons and comic books.8. Are you able to be this creative in your day job?By day I am a freelance illustrator, animator and game developer. I just released my first iOS game with the Happy Badger Studio, "Stodgy Gents" where I was art director and primary animator! It's free on iTunes - Check it out if you like!9. What was the first game that got you interested in BioWare?Mass Effect was my first Bioware game. I'm really anxious for game number 3 in the spring! I can't wait to build my own little krogan princess and level the field with her in multiplayer!10. What do you look for most in videogames when you are playing? (story, action, art….ect)I love playing video games but I'm not very good at them. What pulls me into a game is the writing; the story and the characters. I will die ten-thousand times playing a game I'm emotionally invested in. I love Bioware games because they make me feel like I'm making the story my own and influencing it with my decisions.Jennifer also writes! Check out her fan fiction here!We will be showing off her artwork all week on our Mass Effect Facebook page as well as our @masseffect Twitter feed! Don't miss out! -

11.14.2011Did you know? One of the neat things about BioWare games is the fun facts that come from the characters who each take on a life of their own. Asking a developer, "Who is your favourite character?" is like asking a mother "Who is your favourite child?"
Once in a while we release those fun facts as "Did you know" features on Facebook. This week's focuses on one of my personal favourites from Dragon Age 2, Varric Theras.
Did you know that Varric’s excessive chest hair has become something of a running joke with developers and fans on the BioWare social forum? It is also something of a running gag in-game, especially with Isabela.

With the high demand for the game, Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk have been asked about bandwidth and whether there will be limits set in place for initial sales. "You have to build the infrastructure to support a certain size launch and we're also thinking really long term at Bioware EA for this, there are going to be many, many consumers coming to the game over time and we're going to be expanding it out." Muzyka told joystiq.com
Muzyka continues, "We have a really aggressive plan post launch to build content and take the feedback to heart that we're getting from players and what they want for continued expansions, and use that feedback to build new content."
