Art Portfolio Submission Guidelines

Format

The following portfolio submission formats are preferred:

  • Web-based portfolio (easy navigation is crucial)
  • Compressed attachments e-mailed
  • CD or DVD with hard copies of any 2D or digital art pieces mailed
  • VHS tape with hard copies of any 2D or digital art pieces (our least preferred format)

*DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS!

Disks, tapes, and any materials included in your application must be labeled with your name and competition number. If you are featuring a full demo film with credits avoid putting material after the credits, or if you must, please indicate this in the shot breakdown.

Content

It is very important to include work that follows the guidelines indicated in the job posting description. BioWare has gone to considerable lengths to provide detailed submission requirements, please include as many of the required samples as possible.

It is highly recommended to include only your best work. We feel your portfolio is only as good as your weakest piece. Keeping this in mind, we discourage showing underdeveloped work or pieces that do not reflect your current skill set. Recent work is the most relevant and is a requirement. We suggest that you have a professional colleague help you edit your portfolio, another set of eyes is always an asset!

Length

It is advised to keep your demo less than 3 minutes. This will require you to edit down to your best work. For your scanned 2D samples, include around ten of your best samples of your color work, figure drawing, and sketchbook pages. Additional samples will be required for a 2D position. Avoid music or sound effects that will distract from the work.

Shot breakdown

BioWare requires a shot breakdown if your demo reel contains any collaborative work or team-based efforts. Indicate exactly what you did on each example, how many people worked on it and length of time to completion.

If you created the entire sample on your own, please state this before you show the sample. For technical art or animation applications it is absolutely crucial that you include detailed descriptions of the technical aspects of your work, particularly if it is not immediately apparent in the samples.

Resume

We feel it is very important to state your intentions in your cover letter; state the competition number and the position title you are applying for. Even if you have multiple skills that are applicable to more than one position, please choose the position that you are most interested in, and be sure your portfolio reflects your choice.

Please list all your schooling complete with start date, end date, confirmation of completion of the program, and what certificate you received upon graduation. Include all relevant employment: provide contact information, tenure, and a reason for leaving.

If you have e-mailed your application, you must state the job you are applying for and your first and last names in the subject line of the e-mail. This is very helpful for the administration of all the applications we receive for our job postings.

The Product Submission Agreement

All applications with portfolio submissions must include a Product Submission Agreement (PSA). Print it out, read it carefully, sign it, and fax it when you e-mail your submission package. If you choose to e-mail us a copy of the PSA, it must include an original signature and include the hard copy with your mailed submission.

We contact only those applicants being considered for an interview. Do not call or e-mail BioWare for updates on your application, unless you have already been contacted by us. Unfortunately, due to the volume of applications we must process, it is impossible for us to contact everyone, let alone provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
