Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, a Canadian province. Canada has ranked among the top 5 countries in the world to live for more than 11 years in a row, claiming the number one spot from 1994 to 2000, according to the United Nations. Edmonton has a population of over 1 million, yet it enjoys one of the lowest population densities in North America. Edmonton is internationally reknown for its festivals, and has been awarded the title of Festival City. Our city also has one of the most thriving and diverse urban economies in the world.

  • Edmonton is Canada's 5th largest city, and the second-biggest between Toronto and Vancouver. Edmonton's population is approximately 730,000 people. The population for Edmonton and the surrounding area is approximately 1,014,000 people.
  • Edmonton was named Canada's most beautiful major city in 1997 and 1998. The city won the prestigious Communities in Bloom awards in the category of communities with more than 300,000 citizens.
  • Communities in Bloom: Edmonton has won several awards since 2000 via the Communities in Bloom organization.
  • Education: To be designated a "Smart City" you obviously need a strong education system. Edmonton is home to Alberta's largest university (University of Alberta), Alberta's largest technical school (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), and Alberta's largest college (Grant MacEwan Community College).   • Shopping: If you like to shop, West Edmonton Mall is the largest in the world! While shopping there, you will be in the only province with no sales tax.
  • Recreation: In 2000, Edmonton ranked 43rd among North American cities in terms of access to recreational facilities. If you enjoy walking through a river valley, Edmonton has the largest natural urban parkland in North America. In fact, our 7400-hectare river valley park system is almost 22 times larger than New York's Central Park!
