This position is responsible for building relationships and influencing the creation and adoption of appropriate new technologies across all projects. Position SummaryThe Director of Technology works in a studio-wide capacity to optimize development for time, cost, quality and predictability. The Director works closely with the Project Directors, Department Directors and Software Architects to create and maintain the multi-year technology roadmap of BioWare. The Director works with project teams to identify and evangelize improvements to runtime technology (game engines) and production technology (development tools and processes). The Director will establish and promote methods for sharing knowledge, tools, processes and source code between development teams. Periodically the Director will directly manage R&D projects of benefit to the entire studio. In addition, the Director serves as an independent advisor to studio management, and works with the VP, Technology to collaborate with, and optimize development across, all Bioware/Pandemic studios. The successful candidate will be highly technically proficient and have extensive experience in the management of technology development. Excellent problem solving, communication, listening and leadership skills are vital, as is the ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders in product development. ResponsibilitiesManages Strategic Technology Plan; Inventories current development technologies; Creates and maintains multi-year roadmap for technology development, in collaboration with Project Directors, Department Directors and Software Architects; Identifies and advises on strategies for efficient development of hit video game titles; Identifies key technologies required to keep Bioware on the leading edge of development. Consults with teams during Technical Planning process and advises on technology and process decisions; Monitors team progress toward technical plans and advises on corrective action when necessary; Works with project team and software architects to constantly improve existing technologies and processes. Monitors Technology Evaluation efforts by project teams and consults with them as necessary; Identifies potentially useful technologies and brings them to the attention of project teams; Ensures the results of evaluations are communicated to all project teams. Establishes and promotes methods for Cross-pollination, in particular sharing knowledge, tools, processes and source code between development teams; Works with the VP, Technology to extend sharing across all Bioware/Pandemic studios. Identifies R&D opportunities for technologies that will benefit multiple projects or the studio as a whole; Evangelizes R&D opportunity within the studio; Upon approval by studio management, builds and manages the R&D team; delivers R&D results in a format useful to project teams. Manages University Liaison relationships; Identifies potential university recruits; Encourages the universities to work on potentially useful, but high risk technology solutions; Identifies new technologies that may be applicable to our projects; Encourages universities to modify course content to include training that is useful for game industry. Identifies Patent opportunities within the studio; Works with legal counsel and patent developers to define, document, and file the patent; Oversees the patent application process. Qualifications
