Visual Effects Artists

BioWare Edmonton is looking for talented artists to join our visual effects team. Successful candidates will be able to research, conceptualize, and animate natural effects (water, smoke, foliage, dust, fabric); as well as fantastical effects (spells, explosions, powers, etc.). You must have an interest in fantasy and be driven to create effects never before seen in video games. You will have a good eye for effective visual representations. Successful candidates must be proficient in animation and have an understanding of physical principals. We are also looking for strong problem solving skills.

Education and Experience

  • 2 years + experience in the game industry is preferred. Or demonstrate visual effects ability.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of 3dsmax would be an asset.
  • Experience in Photoshop or After Effects.
  • Experience with a scripting language (Mel, Maxscript, Phyton, etc.) would be an asset.

Skills / Abilities / Knowledge / Personal Suitability

  • Independent and able to self-supervise.
  • Animation skills.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with designers to anticipate their needs.
  • Ability to share and teach knowledge to other artists at BioWare.
  • Possess good problem solving skills.
  • Solid technical abilities to aid in creating new visual effects art pipelines.
  • Meticulous and organized in the approach to tasks, files and storage of the material.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Portfolio Requirements

3D portfolio (Please include as many of the following elements as you can)

  • Examples of natural and organic effects (smoke, fire, waterfalls).
  • Examples of fantastical effects animation (spells, explosions).
  • Examples of rigid or soft body dynamics.
  • Effects created in a game engine.
  • Examples of lighting, texturing, and modeling.
  • Examples of various animations.

Optional: Technical Portfolio

Please submit descriptions or examples of technical projects. Projects of interest could include:

  • Descriptions or examples of technical projects.
  • MaxScript: source code of scripts.
  • Any other programming examples or technical examples you have created.
