Mass Effect Press Tour 07

Mass Effect Press Tour 07

This month, some of the top gaming journalists in North America flew to BioWare's studio here in Edmonton, Alberta. We treated them to an exclusive look at never-before-seen features of the upcoming sci-fi epic and a wide variety of cookies and exotic fruit juices. We have a ton of coverage from all over the intertubes, and you can expect even more in the next week:

New articles, previews, and videos are now up at your favourite game news sites:

And if you absolutely, positively must have more Mass Effect, keep an eye out for an MTV.com segment related to machinima and Mass Effect. G4TV's X-Play is also working on a complete 30-minute episode dedicated exclusively to Mass Effect. How do you like them space apples?

Check out a couple Press Tour 07 pics up at Flickr.

Mass Effect News From Around the Universe

Mass Effect News From Around the Universe

BioWare was busy showing Mass Effect to most of the known world this past month: the Penny Arcade Expo, Germany's own gaming conference - Leipzig Games Convention, Microsoft's XO7 event in Toronto, and a huge press tour through Europe that included stops in five countries in five days.

Open-ended combat seen on GameSpot (Leipzig): GameSpot liked what they saw as new combat options were revealed to them in the latest build of the game.

IGN (Leipzig): An even more polished version of Mass Effect was shown at the Leipzig Games Convention. IGN provided a short progress report.

PAX stage demo: Watch the first few minutes of Mass Effect gameplay.

New York Times (Most Anticipated): Read a short preview posted by the New York Times.

Mass Effect special episode on 1UP.com (General, Character Creation): Watch the character creation video.

Interview with Casey Hudson: In this IGN interview with Mass Effect's Project Director, discover how deciding your hero's past shapes his future.

PAX Presence

PAX Presence

The community team, with help from Mass Effect's QA Technical Lead, headed off to the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle to show off Mass Effect to standing-room only crowds. Many soul-enriching demos were shown, an Elite Xbox 360 with Mass Effect faceplate, signed by the entire dev team was given away, and Community Coordinator Evil Chris Priestly got his pic taken with Wil Wheaton. Wil Wheaton people! The trip could not have been crazier if comedy legend Mel Brooks himself had kissed Mass Effect QA Technical Lead Kim Hansen on the cheek...oh wait, that happened as well. Madness!

Listen to the wrap-up podcast with the community team.

Take a gander at a space-age, 360 degree view of the Mass Effect PAX demo.

Beam headache-inducing envy waves at the winner of the signed 360 at PAX, seen here with his prize. Congrats to Dance Dance Revolutionmeister.

Evil Chris took some slightly evil shots of Microsoft's XO7 event in Toronto.

Mass Effect Caption Contest

Win a signed piece of Mass Effect concept art right from BioWare. All you need to do is make us laugh...and not that nervous polite laugh you use while listening to Saren trying to tell jokes:

Saren: Knock, knock
Pasty Human: Who's there?
Saren: <gunshot>

How do I enter?

All you need to do to enter is come up with a creative caption for this Mass Effect screenshot and then post your caption in the Mass Effect forum contest thread. Have fun!

"The important thing about the ESRB rating (or any regional rating system) is that they are guides and should be used as guides.

Personally, I hope parents of anyone "too young" to handle the game, or people who do not like certain content in their games, investigate what the game contains. Different people have different tolerances or guidelines for what they or their kids should play. I would much rather that most people investigate and a few choose to avoid Mass Effect as it does not follow their beliefs or morals, than everyone plays it but some people are offended by it. Ratings are a guide that should help people make informed, intelligent decisions.

I have known some very mature 14 year olds. I have also known some very immature 40 year olds. I know which ones I think would have been able to handle content better."

"Every game I've ever worked on has a timetable and a deadline. Making a game is a massive cooperative enterprise filled with many unknown elements and constant revisions. It varies from project to project how far that deadline gets pushed as you go (I've yet to have worked on a project that hit its original deadline).

As you move forward you get a better idea of how long it takes to make the elements of your game - the writing, creating a level, creatures, etc. So you get a better sense of when you'll be on store shelves as you go. Usually in development, I'm more curious than any fan on the forums of when the game is actually going to be done. Hopefully, that provides some insight on why devs sometimes say, "It'll be done when it's done" or something like it."

BioWare Highly Recommends The Witcher

Yes we certainly do. The folks over at CD Projekt have crafted an epic tale of monster hunter extraordinaire Geralt in a world without mercy using a completely revamped and unrecognisable Neverwinter Nights Aurora engine.
