Road to E3 - Part 2 By Tom Ohle May 1, 2002 Ah, it's been a while since we last visited the magical land of E3 preparation. If you remember the last time we spoke, our Systems Administration folks were building our demo systems while watching movies in a small, stuffy room - I know, hardly work at all. Well, the past few weeks have been a little more than hectic, as us PR types - in cooperation with the SysAdmin guys - have actually been doing stuff! The days of sitting around and drinking 20-year-old scotch and smoking cigars wrapped in $100 bills while being massaged by qualified professionals are over - E3 is less than a month away, and loads of preparation is required to make sure the show is a success.
The past month or so has been chock-full of meeting goodness, with us recently adopting a 9:30am E3 meeting - which means I have to get up half an hour earlier than usual... you see what kind of sacrifices I'm making for you folks here? No longer can I sleep in past 9 and stroll into work nonchalantly, eat my breakfast and work in sort of a tired lull until lunch. That's just not going to happen. In these meetings, we discuss all of the finer details of E3 preparation: what kind of food and beer, if any, we'll serve at our booth; what sort of chairs we'll have; how much we'll charge adoring fans to play the game... you know, the usual stuff.
Among the larger issues being discussed is just what kind of demo we're going to provide to those who visit our booth. Would we let them run through the single-player game? Would we host a multi-player session? Would we create a deathmatch module? Neverwinter Nights is a hugely multi-faceted title, so the options we have for our E3 demo are practically endless. To best illustrate the entire game, we finally settled on a multi-player session, to be DM'd by BioWare staff members. Well, you may be wondering which magical BioCreatures will be doing the honors? Of course, it'll be myself and Jay "What a Maniac" Watamaniuk! The wacky duo that brought the world the DM/multi-player demos for April's press visits is back for a second wild adventure involving the Aurora Neverwinter Toolset, the DM client, a handful of lucky gamers, and a few too many bottles of beer. Watch for it, coming to an E3 near you in May!
Last month's update brought you a few exciting pictures of people doing interesting stuff like standing, building computers, sitting, and looking at things, and this month is no worse! It's actually better! Above you can catch a picturestravaganza (here at BioWare, I've been given free reign to make up words as I please, and I'll abuse that privilege as much as I possibly can!) that's full of people doing other exhilarating things like writing this article, listening to music, and holding paper! Everyone's doing E3-related work, and it's more exciting than anything you've ever seen in your life… you may not see it in their eyes, but you can trust me - I'm always getting emails that say stuff like "Hey Tom, don't you think photocopying and faxing stuff is so much more fun when it has to do with E3 stuff!?" You bet it is, Sparky. Good times. Good times. Other Road to E3 Articles: Go to Part (Previous Part - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 - Next Part) |
