BioWare at GenCon 2002

By Teresa Aug 16, 2002

The gang is back from GenCon 2002, and overall we had a great show! Those of us who attended were - me (Teresa), Aidan (NWN designer), Jay (Community Manager), Nils (most excellent Dungeon Master) and Mike (one of our many talented artists), and we agreed it was a lot of fun and very interesting indeed! The gang headed over to Milwaukee, home of GenCon for the past 32 years, and presented Neverwinter Nights to the enthusiastic attendees of the show.

Over the course of 4 days, Neverwinter Nights was seen at 3 different locations. The first was at our own booth, the BioWare booth, where a Dungeon Master (a BioWare employee) set up a module, and hosted multi-player sessions throughout the day. The second was at our publisher's booth, Infogrames, where Aidan or Jay gave presentations. And the third area was in the Wizards of the Coast castle, where 2 game play stations were set up, and people were able to jump on and play in single player, or work in the Aurora Toolset.

This was a great experience for us all! We had fun hosting the DM sessions, and playing Neverwinter Nights with the fans. It was a great social experience too. Many people, who are die-hard pen and paper players of Dungeons and Dragons, had never played the game before and after going through a couple of sessions said they really enjoyed the experience. Others talked about the toolset and shared their interesting plans for creating adventures. It was pretty cool to hear what some people have in mind! We can't wait to play some of those modules!

Sadly this was the last year GenCon will be in Milwaukee. It was good fun. One of the highlights was going out to a restaurant called the Safe House - a spy themed restaurant - where a password is needed to gain admittance, or they make you do crazy singing and dancing shenanigans. Oh and did I mention they videotape you so that the patrons inside the restaurant can see you making a fool of yourself. Yup, lots of fun!

A fabulous time was had by all. "It was great to see that Neverwinter appeals to so many different groups of people, from the die-hard gamers to those new to the world of Neverwinter Nights. I'm glad I had the chance to touch base with the folks here", said Jay. Neverwinter Nights received a lot of positive feedback from the convention-goers, and we had a great time showing everyone the game!

Stay tuned for more information here at www.bioware.com on news about next year's GenCon. With many interesting projects in the works, BioWare just might make it out there again...might seeya there next year...
