Hockey Night at Bioware

By Tom Ohle Oct 17, 2002

It's autumn. The temperature in the modern prairie metropolis of Edmonton has been dropping steadily over the past few months, and residents are forced to pack on additional weight in anticipation of the coming winter. Humans, unfortunately, don't have the ability to hibernate-something that would pretty much pass the time in the coldest of seasons-so we're forced to find other ways to occupy our time. Up here, hockey is that time-waster. A group of intrepid BioWarriors have been making their way to a local hockey rink to engage in some extremely competitive and entertaining hockey games.

The skill level varies greatly: some players are seasoned veterans; others are unsure rookies. However, everyone gives it everything they've got. While professional athletes claim that they need to give it 110%, our guys are out there giving it 160%, sometimes more. I saw one guy giving 241%. That, my friends, is dedication.

The teams were divided using the always-fair "tossing of the sticks." With only one goalie between the two teams, one squad was forced to hit a post or crossbar to score, while the other needed to beat a human goaltender. As I previously mentioned, it was a hard-fought battle; players emerged battered and bruised, and the ice had never been hit by so many butts. With myself sidelined with a broken-but-healing collarbone, neither team could truly live up to its fullest potential; my team would have lit up the goal light so often that the light bulb within would have needed to be replaced. It's true, folks.

This is merely the first of several planned installments of "Hockey Night at BioWare." In the future, you can read along as we create two teams and report on the games they play against each other, culminating in a truly huge championship game. Stay tuned.
