Hockey Week Two By Tom Ohle Oct 30, 2002 This week saw a few new faces join the crew for some gritty hockey action. A second goaltender was added to the roster, which allowed for some better competition; hitting the goalpost is a lot harder than beating a human goaltender-rather than having a single inch-wide target, you have several much larger ones.
We decided that 4-on-4 play would make the most sense, and so the teams were divided, once again by the ceremonial "tossing of sticks." The teams were fairly evenly matched, proving for an exciting battle from start to finish. Team Left Side Of The Rink (Team Left) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a hat trick by Brett "Silent But Deadly" Tollefson, including an amazing tough-angle shot. Right Side Of The Rink (Team Right) battled back after being down 5-1 to get within 2 goals. For the next fifteen minutes or so, the teams exchanged goals until the score reached a tight 9-7 in favor of Team Left. Tensions rose as Shane Welbourn and Brook Bakay, both wearing Vancouver Canucks uniforms from different eras, collided in front of Team Left's goal, and proceeded to push and shove each other around. To everyone's chagrin, it was just a joke-fight. Too bad. The physical play continued as Team Left's Robin Mayne was leveled at center ice by Team Right's Don Yakielashek, suffering a bruised ego. Team Left managed to extend the lead to 12-7 with roughly 5 minutes to go. Team Right gave it all they could, but only managed 2 goals in the remaining time. The 12-9 victory puts Team Left in first place with 1 win and 0 losses, while Team Right drops to 0-1 and out of a playoff spot for the moment. |
