Grains of Truth by Jared Evers Interview by Jay Watamaniuk Go to (Previous - Introduction, Myranni's Magic, Walking with a Ghost, A Hero's Death, Firestarter, The Realm Below, A Moonless Night, Aspects, The Badger, the Cat and the Book, Grains of Truth, Find the Fish!, Ghosts of the Past, To Hell and Back - Next ) Where can I find your module, Grains of Truth?Right over at the NWVault. How did you find the process of creating a module with the contest restrictions imposed?
What characters in literature fascinate you the most? From a writing point of view, my favorite character is Boromir from The Lord of the Rings. A noble man, he's all the more impressive because of his flaws. Once he dishonors himself, his true character is revealed through his sacrifice and subsequent redemption. Another favorite is Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities, because even with his brilliance he isn't able to see his own great worth, yet selflessly makes the ultimate sacrifice so that others can have the happiness he denies himself. Basically, I prefer characters with layers to their personalities. People whose actions are influenced not only by their wants, but by their weaknesses. What advice would you give to someone who wants to write a story but is not sure how to get started?Start your story in the middle. Begin with your characters already in an interesting situation, and then let their actions describe who they are and why they are there. My own personal method is to first create characters, learn precisely who they are, and then place them in a situation and see how they react. If you know your characters intimately, they'll almost write themselves. With that in mind, the best way to get started is to dive in. The only real way to learn the craft is to do it. Often the biggest trial is simply getting the story finished, so try to just push through until it's done. It's much easier to improve a story that's complete than it is to constantly reinvent the plot as you write. Once you've written a few stories, you'll learn what works for you and they'll start to flow naturally.
