MDK2 Story Background If you're reading this page then you probably know a bit about the innovative game and novel characters from the original game. If not, you'll probably find most of your answers here and on Shiny's MDK Web Page. You might ask the question, why is BioWare doing MDK2? Isn't BioWare an RPG developer? BioWare developed the blockbuster, Baldur's Gate, so isn't an action game an unusual direction to pursue? In fact, BioWare's first game was Shattered Steel, an action-oriented, big-robot game published by Interplay in 1996. BioWare has two main interests, action games and RPGs, expect to see a lot of both from us in the future as we have teams working in both areas. Thus far our involvement with Shiny has consisted of us discussing our concept of MDK2 as well as showing both Interplay and Shiny the demos of MDK2 that we create. Both Interplay and Shiny have been very supportive of the work that we've been pursuing and they've been nice enough to let us pursue our own vision for MDK2. MDK2 is being published by Interplay worldwide in fall 1999, simultaneous for both the SEGA Dreamcast and the PC. The Details Here's a quick summary. In MDK you played a character named Kurt Hectic. Kurt was controlled in a 3rd person perspective from which he was maneuvered to explore an amazing 3D world. Kurt had a snazzy suit that gave him some powers, including the ability to jump into sniper mode to defeat his enemies from afar, and a ribbon chute that allowed him to gracefully maneuver through the air. The indomitable Doctor Fluke Hawkins and Max, the six-legged robotic dog supported Kurt through is adventures in MDK but never really got too involved in the action. This is where MDK2 offers players a new direction. All three characters - Kurt, Doctor Hawkins, and Max - are player characters; each has his own levels, powers and items. Most importantly, each character has a completely different gameplay focus. More specifically, Kurt is all about stealth and sniping, the Doctor has few direct attacks but has the ability to create items and effects out of simple household objects, while Max is a cigar smoking, quad gun toting demolition squad of a dog. There are a few things about MDK2 that you can count on being the same as in original MDK. The humor and wackiness of the game is being maintained and perhaps being amplified in MDK2. The jaw-dropping artwork will be back. And finally, the totally fun-oriented gameplay is going to be there in a big way. MDK2 is going to be a whole wad of fun and entertainment. |
